[Historical Event] PAC-MAN arrives in Japan

In July 1980, Namco released Puck-Man in Japan, a maze arcade game designed by Toru Iwatani that would soon become one of the most influential titles in video game history.
Renamed Pac-Man for international markets, the game introduced a fresh concept focused on navigation, strategy, and character-driven gameplay instead of the space shooters that dominated arcades at the time. Its simple mechanics, colorful design, and memorable cast of ghosts appealed to a much broader audience, helping video games reach families, women, and casual players around the world.
Pac-Man quickly became a global cultural phenomenon, inspiring sequels, merchandise, animated television series, music, and countless adaptations. It set new standards for game design, branding, and commercial success, proving that video games could become mainstream entertainment. More than four decades later, Pac-Man remains one of the most recognizable icons in gaming history, symbolizing the golden age of arcades and leaving a lasting legacy that continues to influence developers and delight players across generations.
